It's Arbor Day: Let's Celebrate Trees

John Platt, April 29, 2011

I think that I shall never see a tree not worthy of celebration.

I love trees. The way they look, the way they feel, and the way they smell. The benefits they provide to the community and environment around them. The home they provide to so many creatures that depend upon them. The way they sway in the wind. What would this world be like without trees?

Every Arbor Day, I make a donation to American Forests, the great non-profit that helps plan trees around the world. Some years, I even go so far as to plant a tree myself, or attend a community event where trees are being planted. I also like to go outside and photograph some trees, which never fail to surprise me with their unexpected beauties.

So what do you do to celebrate Arbor Day and the trees around you? If you don't already have plans, you can visit the Arbor Day Foundation website for ideas on how to celebrate. Maybe that means planting a tree of your own, or helping to cut back weeds around a neighborhood tree so it has a better chance to grow. Or maybe just taking an afternoon nap under a tree in your own yard.

Whatever you do, take some time to enjoy trees today. They give us so much. They deserve a little of your attention today, if not every day.
