Become a Docent!

By Placer Nature Center, February 08, 2012

No experience needed! We train you – it’s easy! Do you love learning or nature or kids or teaching or science or history? Yes!? Then come learn to work with small groups children in discovery-based, hands-on learning activities as a Placer Nature Center Docent! We teach you everything you need to get started. We also give our docents free on-going learning opportunities in interpretation, childhood development, nature and our local ecosystems. You’ll learn how to take complex ideas like watersheds and introduce them to children of all ages. Many of our volunteers have do not have a background in education or natural science, but our training and mentoring programs provide you with everything you need to become a natural science educator. You also get to take part in fun Docent-only field trips, potlucks and more! Who? Anyone over the age of 14 can be a docent. If you are looking for something fun and interesting to do, have a great appreciation for our local natural resources, enjoy working with children and the camaraderie of other like-minded people, then you will love being a docent. As our docents work with children, all docents are required to be fingerprinted. What? A Docent is a person who volunteers their time to teach others. You have the option of being a docent for school programs or on the weekend for the general public. As natural resources impact every single aspect of our lives and everything we do has an equal reverse impact, as a Docent you will help people see our community with more respect and appreciation from a the smallest bacteria’s lifecycle to our complex water management systems. Where? Docents have the option to teach programs at the Nature Center, at local schools or even on local private and public land. You have the flexibility to choose where and how you want to volunteer within our programs. When? Opportunities to volunteer happen Monday through Saturday and from 9 AM to 9 PM. Docent training happens twice a year, once in Fall and once in Winter. How? Come to an Docent Training introduction class to learn about the nature center and your options. Introduction classes are offered during the week and on the weekend. You choose between two types of training options, a Fast-track option and a learn when you can option.
